Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that affects between 10-15% of women of reproductive age. PCOS affects the ovaries, and is often characterised by excess production of androgens (male-type hormones such as testosterone). One of the most visible effects of polycystic PCOS is excessive and unwanted body hair. Laser hair removal is one of the most effective ways to treat this side effect, and can be a great help to women suffering with this condition.
How does laser hair removal work?
The laser is attracted to melanin, which is the dark pigment that gives hair its colour. This is why laser hair removal works best on pale skin with dark, coarse hair. The laser tracks the pigment to the root of each hair and then releases heat energy, effectively destroying the hair without affecting the skin. As the hair will only be killed off if it is caught in a growth phase, a minimum of 6 treatments are usually required to guarantee a long-lasting outcome.
While we’d love to tell you that you’ll never see an unwanted hair again after laser removal, the way in which the human body produces hair means that is nearly impossible. No matter what you read elsewhere, laser removal offers permanent hair REDUCTION, not removal. What we can confidently achieve is a 70-95% reduction, with the hair that does re-grow appearing fine and light.
Please be aware that laser removal is not suitable if you are taking certain medication including glycolics, Retin-A and astringents. Our expert laser technicians will be able to offer further advice during one of our free, one-to-one consultations.
You will be provided with goggles to protect your eyes, then cooling gel will be applied to the area being treated to soothe the skin. Some people experience a light tingling sensation during the treatment, however this is very mild. Depending on the area being treated, lasering could take between 15minutes and an hour, which means you can easily fit a session in during your lunch break. You are welcome to listen to music or bring reading material to occupy yourself during the treatment. To get the best result, treatments should be undertaken regularly. We would suggest every four weeks for facial hair and every six weeks for other areas.
